Passing Through The Halls

Passing Through The Halls By: Ashley Hohneke Every year, a fresh wave of students leave the halls of Kennedy High School for, what is usually, the last time. Some may be scared, terrified of what life is like outside of the safe confines of their homes. Others may feel prepared, ready to leave their lives behind and pack up to college, eager to begin that new chapter in their lives. However, there is still a question that current Kennedy students may be asking about this uncertain future: What does life after Kennedy actually look like? The difference between high school and college education, looks unique for each individual. For some it may feel like a giant change from what they are used to. They may feel like the classes are tougher and the curriculum more cut-throat. On the other side, these students may believe that the learning is easier, and the newfound freedom more of a prize than a burden. Emily Hohneke, a cyber security major at Iowa State University,...

Synthesis and Reflection

Synthesis and Reflection Media Law I wasn't very informed, prior to this course, about what media law exactly was. With this tidbit in mind, there were so many concepts about this topic that were new to me. However, the one that I found the most interesting was the Shield Law. I didn't know that there was a law out there that protected reporter's sources right to anonymity. I found this especially endearing, that journalists have the right to choose not to disclose who their source was, if revealing so would in turn result in danger to that person or others. This is a law that is very important for me to know, if I ever choose a career in journalism, and is also something every citizen should know as well. We have a right to choose to be anonymous if we want to tell our stories, and the government shouldn't be able to hinder that privilege. Shield Law is an important part of our first amendment rights, and has also changed how I will think in my future if...

Opinion Piece (Practice)

Kingdom of Ash Review If you’re a book lover, you’ve probably heard of the fantasy series written by #1 New York Times Bestseller, Sarah J. Maas. Maas has written both the A Court of Thorns and Roses series, and the Throne of Glass series. She knits together fantastical worlds that suck up her readers in a whirlwind and keep them guessing for more. Sadly, Throne of Glass has finally come to an end with Kingdom of Ash, book seven, as the grand finale to the wildfire that was book one. This novel was released on October 23 rd and was a staggering nine-hundred and eighty-four pages. Wrapped in gold, this book was not one that any fans will soon forget and was a heart-stopping finale to the tale of Celeana Sardothian.                 After I finished Empire of Storms and Tower of Dawn, I knew that I just had to get my hands on the next volume written by the wild force that is Sarah J. Maas. I was heartbroken ...

Firefighter of The Mind

Firefighter of The Mind Growing up, Rachel Collins dreamed of becoming a firefighter, but today she’s putting out fires of a different kind. Numerous experiences throughout her young life have shaped Collins’ future, and have led her into her career path of high school counseling today. Many of these instances have showed her what exactly in education is lacking and would eventually lead her to find ways to improve the system, in her future. Collins was singled out in third grade for her spelling skills, which then led to an eye-opening moment to the unfairness in schooling. Throughout her childhood Rachel always struggled with spelling while her peers around her thrived. Her issues prompted her teacher to place her in a second-grade classroom for spelling, since she was below the expectations of her grade. During this time, she reported feelings of stupidity, and exclaimed that the teacher had “hurt her soul”. In addition to this, another way that Rachel felt singled out in h...

One to One

One to One Technology has been an important part of our educational system, and is often used to make the learning experience easier for the students. Computers are something that we use everyday in school, and are sometimes even imperative for the completion of a student’s assignment. Whether we’re typing up a paper, or doing research for a class project, computers and laptops are something that have been getting more and more useful and needed.     In Kennedy High School, using laptops and desktop computers can sometimes become a hassle for the teachers. Laptop and surface carts have to be reserved, and sometimes our educators cannot get these carts when they desperately need them for the students. There is an answer, however, that can make this easier for all parties involved. Next year, Kennedy High School has announced that they are switching to one to one. This means that one laptop will be assigned to each student so that they always have a computer with th...

The article “Mollie Tibbets’ accused killer pleads not guilty” , is obviously about the murder of Iowa University student Mollie, but it also delves into the controversial topic of illegal immigration.                 This article connects to me and my life, because I am a citizen of Iowa, and this was a horrific event that occurred close to where I live. I remember when the press initially informed us of Tibbets’ kidnapping, that my mother became worried to send my older sister off to college and became wary to let her run alone. Since this event hit so close to home it made people nervous and afraid that this tragedy could happen to their own kids. Tragedies like these are a lot easier to ignore or look over when they didn’t happen so close to wherever it is that you call home.                 The topic that is conveyed in this art...

The article “Using Young Adult Novels to Make Sense of #MeToo” , by Julia Jacobs, focuses on the issue of domestic violence that young adult books are helping spread awareness for. I connect with this article, not because I have experienced any domestic violence, but because I think of myself as a writer and want to try and spread important ideals like this one. I believe that it’s our mission as writers to inform our readers of topics that may affect them even if they’re difficult to talk about. And we can tell our readers about these topics by not only writing news articles, but by writing novels that still enforce the same messages.                 This text made some good points on how the #MeToo movement, is helping young readers everywhere understand more about this topic. I agreed with the message that came across, which was that teenagers need to ...
