The article “Mollie Tibbets’ accused killer pleads not guilty”, is obviously about the murder of Iowa University student Mollie, but it also delves into the controversial topic of illegal immigration.
This article connects to me and my life, because I am a citizen of Iowa, and this was a horrific event that occurred close to where I live. I remember when the press initially informed us of Tibbets’ kidnapping, that my mother became worried to send my older sister off to college and became wary to let her run alone. Since this event hit so close to home it made people nervous and afraid that this tragedy could happen to their own kids. Tragedies like these are a lot easier to ignore or look over when they didn’t happen so close to wherever it is that you call home.
The topic that is conveyed in this article is a difficult and controversial issue, that has pros and cons on each side. Illegal immigration has been discussed for years and has always been concerning to the United States. We want people to come to our country, but we want them to go through the legal process. For some immigrants and refugees that may be difficult, or something that they just don’t have the luxury of time to do.
In this article, they are mostly just concerned with the illegal immigrant that killed Mollie. However, in some of the quotes in this piece (namely the one by Trump) I got the feeling that the speaker was painting all unlawful immigrants in a bad light. For example, in an interview that “Fox and Friends” had with Donald trump, the president states that Mollie was murdered by a ‘” horrible person that came in from Mexico, illegally here.’” To me, I catch an underlying meaning that every illegal immigrant is bad news. As for if I agree with the article or not, I’d say that I’m neutral since the article just reported and didn’t seem to have a bias.
News such as this, murders and crimes, matters because people who live in the area where the crime happened, deserves to know what’s going on. Articles like these can also warn people of criminals out there who may have not been detained yet, and situations/places that they should be wary of. This article illustrates unfortunate reasons of why you should not run or jog in a secluded area, and why maybe you should take someone with you and not go out alone. I wish these were life lessons we didn’t have to learn, but in this day and age, we need to be careful of where we are and who we concern ourselves with.

  2. Ashley, you do a nice job of trying to remain neutral in your responses which is a major distinction between journalistic writing and other types of writing. Kudos.

I thought it really brought the topic home when you talk about your sister who I know is a runner and who is starting college this year. It makes the news feel even more urgent.

  5. I am very appreciative of the fact you did not talk about immigrants in so much of a bad way. I do also agree with the fact that immigrants should go through the process so they can come here legally, however me having half my family be outside of the country it can be tough especially when they get denied and aren't able to come to the U.S.
